For over 3 decades, the Lions Club of Port Shepstone has been sponsoring and hosting a monthly games afternoon for senior citizens. Initially this fun activity was provided to senior citizens who were blind, however, in later years, we welcomed all seniors who wanted to participate. Social games afternoons for the elderly are held on the last Saturday afternoon of the month at the Port Shepstone Lions' Den. Transportation for these folk is provided by the members of the Club and the Ladies' Club provides delicious eats. They are also treated to live sing-a-long music courtesy of the Club's band. Elderly folk from three local retirement villages, namely, Mbango Valley, Anerley Haven and the Flower Foundation regularly attend these enjoyable events. This service is provided free of charge and prizes consist of bars of chocolate which are donated by the club.
The Annual Senior Citizens' Christmas party is held during December each year and hosts up to 100 old folk from the many retirement complexes within the Port Shepstone area. This event is extremely popular and, for many of the old folk, is the only real celebration of Christmas that they will enjoy. A superb 3 course meal is provided by our Ladies and each guest is given a sponsored gift. Our Club "Band" provides live entertainment and sing-a-long music which often results in sporadic dancing and great fun for all.
The Port Shepstone Lion Ladies Club prepare and pack hundreds of frozen meals for the elderly which are distributed free of charge to the Flower Foundation Home for the Aged. Meals are are pre-cooked by the ladies and packed in the kitchen at the clubhouse on a monthly basis. The cost of these meals is sponsored by the Club and various other sponsors within our community.
